Day-by-Day Breakdown:

Day 1:

Arrive at Mana Pools and meet your guide before a leisurely game drive through the floodplain to the first camp, Shumba. It is a superb introduction to the area, with open views and a very good chance of seeing wildlife straight away. After a fresh lunch in camp, the first walk begins near the meeting point of the Ruckomechi and Zambezi Rivers. It is an easy, well-paced start, with time to settle into the rhythm of moving through Mana on foot. By sunset, camp is ready, drinks are poured, hot showers are waiting, and dinner is served under the stars.

Day 2:

The day begins before sunrise, with warm water outside the tent and coffee, tea, and something freshly baked on the coals already waiting. Walking in the cool of the morning is one of the real joys of this journey. After a few quiet hours on foot, breakfast is served under the trees before the route continues through floodplains and woodland. This is when the experience becomes more textured, tracks, birds, smaller details, and all the signs of the bush start to come together. Later, there is a proper lunch, time to rest, and the final walk into Chessa, where camp is already fully prepared for your arrival.

Day 3:

Another early start, another beautiful sunrise, but this day has a stronger sense of remoteness as the route moves into Mana Pools’ Wilderness Area. Breakfast may be taken out on the Mbera floodplain, in lovely acacia woodland and thick grass that predators favour. Later in the dry season (your September timeframe we are planning for), this can also be a very rewarding area for female elephants moving with their calves. The flow of the day stays wonderfully balanced, walking in the best hours, lunch and a siesta in camp (up to you), then the last stretch into Ilala for your final night in the bush.

Day 4:

The final morning is shaped around your onward plans. Enjoy the chance for a slower start and soak up camp one more time. A full English breakfast rounds things off before the short game drive back to the Mana Main airstrip. It is a gentle, fitting end to a journey that feels both adventurous and intimate.

Area Overview

Mana Pools works especially well on foot because the landscape changes so naturally as you move through it. This shoreline route starts in the productive floodplain, where water draws high concentrations of wildlife, then gradually reaches quieter woodland and the more remote Wilderness Area. Along the way, guests may encounter elephant, buffalo, impala, waterbuck, hippo, crocodile, and plentiful birdlife, with lion, leopard, and painted hunting dog all part of the wider area too. Later in the dry season, parts of the Mbera floodplain can be particularly rewarding for female elephants with calves. John’s Camp is a very intimate experience with just six walk-in Meru-style safari tents, each set well apart along the floodplain for privacy and a stronger sense of being in the landscape. The eight tented chalets are spacious and very elegantly put together. Two of them can accommodate families with kiddies' rooms joined to the master bedrooms. The walls are floor-to-ceiling mesh windows with accompanying linen curtains, giving the place a sophisticated feel. The ensuite bathroom is designed so every part of it has a view out over the lake. Outside, there is a second bathroom, complete with shower and tub, playfully adorned with bright tiles. Each room also has its own private deck with a few camp chairs and a hammock strung beneath the trees.

Changa sits in its own private concession with 4 km of frontage onto Lake Kariba, just east of Matusadona National Park. This area is wild and remote, well known for its big game (especially elephants, buffalo, and hippos), and is perhaps the best tiger-fishing destination in Africa.

The largest artificial lake in the world, most lodges in this area are built along the shores or escarpments of Lake Kariba. The vast expanse of water is home to huge populations of hippo and crocodile, and draws super-herds of buffalo and elephant, antelope, and even big cats looking for a drink. Boating safaris are very popular, especially on a cruiser, which offers the best view in the house. And don’t skip an evening of stargazing.

Boat trips on Lake Kariba are really Changa's biggest draw. You'll find great game viewing (hippos, crocs, elephants) and birdwatching (fish eagles, herons, shorebirds) on-board. Combined with tiger fishing (you might catch some bream and catfish too) and a trip to Sanyati Gorge for spectacular scenery, you have an exceptional water-oriented experience. Game drives and an informative bush walk with an expert guide, or even combine the two, as the guides are happy to get you out of the vehicle to follow tracks when the situation allows.

There are ten deluxe tented suites, including two family chalets and two honeymoon suites. Each of the canvas tents is covered with a shade-giving thatched A-frame and has a polished concrete veranda overlooking the waterhole. Hwange National Park is the largest in Zimbabwe, covering an impressive 14,650 sq km, a short flight south of Victoria Falls. Over 100 species of mammals reside here, whilst almost 400 species of birds decorate the skies. Perhaps most exciting is the 40,000-strong population of tusker elephants, whose presence is world-renowned and a joy to watch day after day.

The dry season (from July to October) is the best time to visit Hwange, as large concentrations of wildlife, particularly the wonderful elephant herds. descend upon the area to drink from the waterholes to survive in this hot and unforgiving environment. Yet, whilst the rains from December to March will see the wildlife dispersing across the park, thus making them harder to spot, the summer showers also bring forth stunning vegetation. This ensures mesmeric bird-watching opportunities as the local population finds itself bolstered by the migrants coming down from the Northern Hemisphere. Hwange National Park truly is a year-round wonderland.
